What is KARS?The Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) connects riders to pre-screened, pre-designated community providers and KARS volunteers allowing them to lead a more active lifestyle. With this new independence they are able to visit their doctor, clinic, enjoy social activities and more. If we can’t provide the ride, we will give appropriate referrals.
Who is eligible to use KARS? Persons over 65 (proof of age required). Non-Wheelchair Adult Persons with Disabilities (proof of disability required only if under age 65).
How do I apply and get a fare card?Call 832-773-8645 for registration forms.
What is a RIDES Fare Card and How Does It Work? For Harris County residents only, it is an electronic fare card to be used with the Harris County RIDES designated transportation partners.
How do I add money (value) to my account? Send your money to the KARS office. Your account will be ready within 3-4 business days of receipt of the funds. The minimum amount that can be purchased is $25.00.
What special reservation information is needed?At the time you make your reservation, please inform the reservation agent if you will be traveling with a companion or of any special needs or assistance you require.
How soon do I need to reserve my seat? A minimum of 24 hours by noon.
Is passenger assistance available?A reasonable level of assistance will be provided to each passenger. Assistance varies by provider.
May I use my wheelchair, scooter or oxygen tanks? Portable oxygen tanks are permitted. Wheelchair and scooter service is currently unavailable.
Are Service Animals permitted? Service animals such as a seeing-eye dog or a hearing dog that assists a customer with a major life activity are permitted on board.
May I travel with a companion? There is no extra charge if you travel with one companion (an adult 18 years or older). Taxi service allows four passengers (including you) to ride for the price of one passenger, providing it is the same pick-up address and same destination.
Is service affected during inclement weather? Every effort is made to provide minimal service interruption for customers needing a life sustaining service such as dialysis.

TERMS TO KNOW

Pick-up Window … is the time frame in which your ride should arrive and be considered on-time.

No-Show … Failure to take a scheduled ride when the vehicle arrives within the pickup window, or if the rider does not have tickets available. Three no-shows within 30 days will result in suspension of service.

Send your money to the KARS office. Your card will be loaded within 3-4 business days of receipt of the funds. The minimum amount that can be purchased is $25.00.

Late Trip … If the driver fails to pick up a rider within the pickup window. Riders contact the provider and make the reservation agent aware that they have not been picked up.

On-Board Travel Time … Under normal operating conditions, you should not be onboard the vehicle for more than 90 minutes.

Advanced Reservation … Non-metered providers require advance notice to reserve
